As a follow up to an earlier article: "How to Choose a Data Center" .... here are some few other considerations and concerns that I recommend. Combine the two lists of items and you're more likely to make an intelligent decision choosing a data center.
Existing customers:
This is not a guaranteed seal of approval, but a data center customer today should give you an idea of the type of due diligence that others have performed on the data center you are evaluating. While many Fortune 50 companies are in a data center, then there's a good chance it is a reliable place to keep your servers. NOTE: Some data centers will take a "marquee" customer to a loss in order to get the brand name. Make sure there are at least two high profile companies colocated there.
Employee retention:
Ask the company how long the facility engineers have worked for that particular data center. High turnover may be an indication of a number of things (including questions).
Power Outages:
Learn about the latest issue of power / failure they suffered - time, the duration of the outage, the reason (s) for interrupt mitigation steps, the. Most data centers will face at some point of the show during its use and want to ensure they are honest with yourself about past, and have taken steps to correct errors.
Connectivity bandwidth:
How much flow "separate" bandwidth are coming into the facility? Many companies say they have peering with providers of "many". But all of this fiber may be entering the building in a single duct. This means that if someone is digging a trench for your Internet access can be cut.
Expansion:
If your company makes it big, you have room to grow? Currently there are many data centers outside of space and / or power. Make sure you are not in a position where you have to choose another place to go on the road. Read More
